Left: Examples of faster asphalt shingles wear along eaves due to funneled water streaming down the roof. Right: Severe shrinkage is the result in tearing away of the shingle tabs. Rain water running down the roof can get in  around the the nail holes into your home.  Your best option is to replace your roof before it gets this aged.

Maine roofing shingles are typically made with a protective nature of asphalt shingles that comes from the long-chain hydrocarbons impregnating the paper. Over a period of  time bot the hot sun and the hydrocarbons soften the shingle and when rain falls the hydrocarbons are slowly washed out of the shingles and down the roof and into the gutters, eventually ending up on the ground .     Valleys collect more water as it is  channeled into these areas the loss occurs more quickly. Sooner or later  the loss of the tar and oils will cause the fibers to become smaller and smaller, this action will eventually expose the nail heads under the shingle tabs.  This  shrinkage will also  break up the shingles surface coating and the granduals that are adhered to the surface of the shingle,  it will eventually causes shingles to tear and  begin to tear itself apart. When the nail heads are exposed to rust, water flow down the roof funneling water and the water into the building around the nail head, which eventuall will result in rotting of the buildings materials and causing moisture damage, mold and other structural issues to ceilings, moldy paint on the inside is a good indicator of this process in place.  Immediate attention should be taken if this mold is spotted.  Roofing Maine has the solutions to all of your roofing needs.  Please call a Roofing Maine estimators today.

  11. Mike says:

Hey, great information on the blog post. Quick question if you don’t mind answering. I am a roofer down in New Hampshire. We are reall struggling to get work down here. It doesn’t seem to matter how low you place your roofing bid because there is always someone willing to under bid you, and these are from good roofing companies. So I can’t really blame the homeowner for taking the bid. Are you guys having the same problem up there? And are any roofing companies doing any hiring?

    Thanks

    Mike.

  12. admin says:

    Mike,

To be honest the same sort of thing is going up here in our roofing community. It’s a tough dilemma to resolve. If everyone continues to undercut each other eventually no one is making a profit. My advice is to offer some specials if that is what it takes to get work. You need to remember you are always better off completing one profitable job than you are losing on several. I would focus more on marketing and less on what everyone else is doing. Sometimes in these markets you should contact old clients and see if they have any roofing needs. Don’t be shy to let them know you are slow–you would be surprised how many people will try to find some work to help out. The bottom line here is not to shoot yourself in the foot during slow periods. If you start setting a low price as a standard you will be conceived as ripping people off when the market returns. That is why coupons are key to giving discounts during these slow times, so the savings is tangible and they can share how the acquired the coupon from others.

    Good luck Mike

Hang in there…roofs are something people can’t go without.

  17. Herme Peruse says:

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
